Chua Chun Leng

Founder & Principal Director

"Music is the serenity of the heart, melody of the soul, and symphony of life." Born and raised in Singapore, Chun Leng possesses an innate, uncompromising passion for the rhythmic arts. He firmly believes that mastering an instrument extends far beyond the mechanical execution of technique; it is a profound journey of creating timeless, heartfelt beats with earnest devotion and an unwavering spirit.

"For me, playing a wrong beat is trivial, but playing without passion is unforgivable. Technique can be taught, but the soul you pour into the snare drum—that is where true musicianship lives."

As the founder of King George's Music Academy, Chun Leng has synthesized decades of stage experience, academic rigor, and a deep-seated love for community into a singular, transformative musical curriculum. Discover the depth of his journey below.

Chun Leng’s profound impact on Singapore’s music landscape is deeply rooted in his extensive work as an educator. Having served as an Adjunct Lecturer at the prestigious Singapore Raffles Music College (SRMC), he guided tertiary-level music students through complex rhythmic theory, advanced kit independence, and the grueling realities of becoming a professional session musician. Teaching at a collegiate level requires an analytical deconstruction of rhythm—a skill that has vastly informed the structured syllabus used at KGMA today.

However, his dedication to education extends far beyond the college lecture halls. Chun Leng is a staunch advocate for early musical intervention. Over the course of his career, he has partnered intimately with the local education ecosystem, teaching percussion and STOMP programs in over 30 primary and secondary schools across Singapore.

These large-scale, high-energy school programs require a unique pedagogical approach. By transforming everyday objects into percussive instruments (STOMP), Chun Leng teaches young students fundamental concepts of syncopation, polyrhythm, teamwork, and kinetic learning. The challenge of engaging a room of forty restless primary school students, and turning that chaotic energy into a synchronized, cohesive musical unit, has honed his ability to connect with students of absolutely any age, background, or skill level.

A true educator never truly steps away from the stage. To ensure his teachings remain relevant, practical, and grounded in the realities of modern performance, Chun Leng maintains a demanding and rigorous schedule as a highly sought-after live session drummer. He currently anchors the rhythm section across several prominent venues in Singapore, commanding the stage multiple nights a week.

  • Every Wednesday: Crossroads Lounge (Serangoon Garden Country Club) Delivering refined, dynamic sets tailored to an exclusive club audience, requiring impeccable volume control and stylistic versatility.
  • Every Thursday: Georges @ The Waterfront Driving high-energy coastal crowds with an expansive repertoire of pop, rock, and contemporary Top 40s.
  • Every Friday: ARFC Woodleigh (Singapore Wanderers RFC) Powering the start of the weekend with driving, anthemic beats suited for a spirited, athletic crowd.

This relentless gigging schedule is not merely a job; it is a live laboratory. Every set played, every unexpected tempo change from a frontman, and every acoustic challenge presented by a new room is carefully analyzed and subsequently integrated into the lessons he provides his students at the academy.

Chun Leng’s musical resume reads like a comprehensive map of Singapore's most vibrant nightlife, live house, and entertainment districts. For over a decade, he has been the rhythmic backbone for countless bands, genres, and special events.

His foundational years saw him taking up residencies and regular slots at iconic venues including J Bar (serving as the resident percussionist alongside Donnie Chan & Vanessa Voon from 2017 to 2018), the bustling Tipsy Panda, and the high-octane B.E.D.

He is a highly respected veteran of the live house circuit, having drummed extensively for Ace Jack and T3 at A_livehouse, Relax Bros at Relax Bar, and OverRun at Pavilion. His adaptability allowed him to seamlessly transition between the acoustic intimacy of HJ Bistro, the sprawling, open-air energy of Cosford Container Park, and performing as part of the Rebellion Duo at Ikigai alongside Chanel, who is also the resident Vocal Coach at KGMA.

Other notable venues where Chun Leng left his rhythmic mark include Red Lantern Restaurant, NTUC Havelock II, and the legendary Jest D’Place. Beyond the club and bar circuit, he has been recognized on a national scale, famously receiving a distinguished award from the Singapore Chinese Chamber of Commerce during the SAF Day Celebration, and being selected by industry peers for the exclusive "Shed!" sharing session alongside premier drummers Billy and Bom.

Perhaps the most defining aspect of Chun Leng’s career is his unwavering belief that music is an inclusive, universal human right. This philosophy was powerfully highlighted when he was featured in a special documentary broadcast by Channel News Asia (CNA) and Channel 5.

The feature showcased his deeply moving and inspiring work teaching Nurul, a visually impaired student, how to play the drum kit. Adapting his standard curriculum, Chun Leng utilized spatial awareness mapping, tactile feedback, and intense auditory training to help Nurul navigate the kit. This experience cemented his belief that physical limitations are secondary to the will of a passionate heart.

It was this exact ethos that led to the founding of King George's Music Academy in 2015. Dissatisfied with rigid, uninspired commercial syllabuses, Chun Leng established KGMA as a sanctuary for genuine musical expression. He personally curates and oversees the entire drumming syllabus, ensuring that whether a student is a hyperactive seven-year-old, a working professional seeking stress relief, or an aspiring stage musician, they receive an education that is technically rigorous, culturally rich, and endlessly passionate.
